Grade one sums on squared paper: pick the number card that fills the blank, bundle ten sticks into a ten, and after a miss the hint opens under the question.
Tap the answer card in the row below and the number gets written into the blank in red pencil. Within 100 the sum is set out in columns: sign on the left, tens above tens, ones above ones. Nothing goes red when you miss: a scrap of rough paper opens under the question, the ones column lights up first with "5 plus 4 is 9, write 9", then the tens. Small sums show counting dots instead, and in the shape round the sides get numbered one by one. In the tens and ones round, tap a tray to take sticks: as soon as ten loose ones are on the table a rubber band ties them into a bundle and the bundle stands over in the tens column. Five right in a row earns a star.
