The Vietnamese lunisolar calendar computes new moons and solar terms astronomically at UTC+7 — that's why Tết occasionally differs from the Chinese calendar (UTC+8). A leap month is inserted when a lunar year spans 13 moons; the leap month is the first one containing no major solar term. Algorithm by Hồ Ngọc Đức, valid ~1800–2199.

Frequently asked questions

Why do lunar and solar dates differ?
The solar calendar follows Earth around the Sun, while the lunar calendar follows the Moon (about 29.5 days per month). Vietnam’s lunar calendar inserts leap months to track the seasons, so a lunar date lands on a different solar date each year.
Is the Vietnamese lunar calendar the same as the Chinese one?
Same principles but computed in different time zones (Vietnam GMT+7, China GMT+8), so some years the new-moon or Tết date differs by a day. This tool uses the Vietnamese time zone.
