⛏️ Archaeology of Vietnam
16 cultures and sites, from the Núi Đọ handaxe to the brick towers of Mỹ Sơn, on one compressed time axis and one map, plus customs read from skeletal remains.
The horizontal axis counts years before present and BREAKS twice (saw-tooth marks): the left portions are compressed, otherwise 15 of 16 entries would crowd into the last 5%. Metal Age row: the northern chain Phùng Nguyên → Đồng Đậu → Gò Mun → Đông Sơn is one directly-inherited sequence drawn as steps; Sa Huỳnh (centre) and Đồng Nai (south) are parallel centres of the same age, not stages of it.
Markers with a dashed edge are anchored to the province: the exact point is approximate. Colours follow the four periods above.
🔎 Old customs with evidence
Ranked by what actually survives: chemical analysis of remains, then observed remains, then texts alone.
Prehistoric dates are ranges in “years before present”; where museums and papers disagree the entry keeps the ~ and notes the divergence. Places follow the 34 new provinces (old names in brackets). Periodisation follows the National Museum of History; Sa Huỳnh, Đồng Nai, Óc Eo and Mỹ Sơn belong to ancient communities on today's Vietnamese territory.
